TADA Winter Break Challenge is Coming : Dissertation House Jan 21-23, 2009

Stop with the excuses . . . it's a brand new year, new president, new era. . . new you.

Join Us in the 'On-line Dissertation House'

Happy New Year! What was your New Year's resolution? Have you renewed your efforts to finish your thesis or dissertation? No more excuses. The inauguration is over! Join us in the Dissertation House for the next 3 days. It doesn't sound like a lot of time but in the past 3 days what have to done to move your thesis or dissertation forward?

At TADA we believe that it is important to do something everyday to move the document forward. Do you have 15 minutes to spare?

A group of students in the University of Maryland System (UMBC) will be participating in "Dissertation House on Campus" for three days. Some will be participating on-line and others will meet daily from 9:00am-5:00 pm. Join us, as we work on our proposals, theses, or dissertations.

Many people use the TA-DA! Winter Break Challenge to take a step on getting one thing accomplished and setting a schedule to get that one thing done. They get that one thing done and then are able to enjoy their break without the sense of guilt looming in the background. Other people set out to see how much they can accomplish in 3 days.

Many of you already work with deadlines. If you're joining this challenge, your deadline is January 23, 2008. Let's see how much can you get done in 3 days! Are you ready?

Don't wait until January 21, 2009 to sign up for your gmail account. Get it now and be prepared on the first day.

On January 21-23, 2009, Join us On-Line by:

  1. Setting up your FREE Google account at www.gmail.com
  2. Logging in to the blog
  3. Clicking on "Comments" below and posting the answers to these questions:
  • What will you work on?
  • How much time will you spend daily working on it?
  • Tell us how much progress you are making, or problems you are having.
  • At the end of everyday plan what you want to accomplish the following day

Here are some helpful tips:

  • Take the first step. Make a commitment to yourself using our TADA!™ Certificate online. Print it out and use it as a daily reminder of your commitment to yourself.
  • Breakdown your tasks into bite-size manageable chunks and make a list and post that list in a public space.
  • Make a daily commitment to work on your thesis or dissertation. Set aside a reasonable amount of time each day to work on your thesis or dissertation. You can get a lot done in 15 minutes a day.
  • Work within your limitations . . . if you are a morning person by all means make yourself some coffee and spend 15 minutes with your dissertation before everyone else rises . . . if you are a night owl . . . turn the TV off 15 minutes earlier and write for 15 minutes.
  • Celebrate small victories when you accomplish your tasks for the day. Spend the rest of the day guilt-free enjoying your Summer Break knowing that you have done something (no matter how small) on your dissertation.
  • Whatever you do, don't spend the week constantly worrying and saying to yourself 'I really should be working'. Above all, enjoy your Winter Break

Now I am working on my thesis, and trying to write all things up.
Everyday I spend almost 7-8 hours on it, but it seems it is not that efficient.
I have many problems with writing it up. First, English is not my native language, writing the literature part is such a painful job. I keep revising but still not satisfied with it; Secondly, the main body part of the thesis is model, proposition and proof, I think it should be right, but each time I revise the thesis, i want to go over the proof or appendix to make sure there is nothing wrong. I think I might set up a specific goal for each day.
I think I am lacking of plan, big problem.

    Hello Jin

Good for you for getting started early. Our regular newsletter subscribers know I believe in using editors. I could not get a monthly newsletter out unless I had an editor.

It is even more important when English in not your first language. Students can still learn how to write well if they hire an editor. You might want to consider using an editor or have a friend edit your writing.

To become a better writer you could think about using an outline and then think about the questions that you want to answer in each section. Thus, then you can treat each section like a written exam.

For each section you want to ask yourself what questions do I need to address in this section.

In terms of working on the proof that's what your advisor is for. You can have your advisor look at the proof and ask him/her if you are going in the right direction.

To use your time effectively you really need to print out everything you have to get an idea of where you really are? I mean everything and put it in a binder. Do you have a cover page? a Table of contents? a bibliography?

Print it out and use a 3-ring binder to organize yourself. If all of what you have in just in a file in the computer that doesn't really get you anywhere.

In addition, everyone should edit their own work from a printed hardcopy not just a computer screen.

I am almost finished designing my survey and will be sending it off soon. Which means my data collection part is over. However, it also means I have to start writing my dissertation. I plan to graduate in Spring 2009. And I need to rewrite all the chapters. How do you suggest I should begin? I really need to have a timeline with specific tasks. How do you propose I go about building one so that I can finish on target.

    Thanks

    Hello and welcome.
Happy Holidays to you and your family.

Even if you have to rewrite each chapter you have to maintain some perspective. Are you really rewriting each chapter from scratch or just re-editing each chapter?

My regular subscribers know what's coming next, so here it is. Start with the deadline and work your way backwards.

    What is your graduation date?
What are your university's policy about giving your readers (committee members) time to read? 2 weeks? 3 weeks? If so take that into account.

Then divide your chapters by the rest of the time you have left. If you do that each chapter will have its own deadline. Stick to monthly schedule and you should be finish. Keep in mind that you don't have to start with chapter 1; start with the chapter you know best and move from there.

Our TADA CD and TADA Online materials deal specifically with this issue. The calendar in TADA creates deadlines for each chapter. It also allows you to input other important dates like date to order cap and gown. Date to submit the required paper work for graduation etc.
Here is the link to our website and buy page.

Hope my answer helps you move forward.

Progress: A couple of weeks ago a friend gave me a challenge to submit at least 5 potential research questions to my advisor. (I had been stalled since completing my qualifying exam.)I accomplished that challenge and am now in the process of refining the question.
Problems: Committing to a final question and submitting it to the committee so I can begin working on the literature review. I would really like to commit the next three days to drafting the literature review, but I think that I have to have my question clearly articulated and approved in order for my time spent on constructing the literature review to be effective.

    Hi All
I am working on my dissertation. I have practically finished my quantitative analysis and write up. I want to work on the qualitative portion. I have to analyze the intereviews and decide how to write that section.

I also need to sure up some information from an earlier chapter. It's on Situated Learning. I have read and reread articles and book sections on the theory but I still find it confusing and am unable to write a sensible section concerning it.

I will start tomorrow morning by reading and summarizing (at least attempting to) a few of the articles again. I plan to work 2 hours a day this week.

    (January 21,2009-4 hours)
    Developing Chapter 2
    (January 22 -23,2009 -
    3 hours daily)
After these three days I will complete the collection of data which should not go beyond March, 2009.
My Goal is to get to the finish line December 2009. What can I do to ensure that I keep this time frame? I have made many of these in the past.

I am excited about this challenge. I like these challenges cause doing the smallest thing is a step forward. I'm working on my dissertation. I have gotten most of my chapters completed but I need to revise chapters 2 and 5. So my goal will be to tighten up 2 - add some more to it and later finish up chapter 5.I plan to spend at least 2 hrs a day since I plan on defending this semester, so I really want to push forward. I enjoyed chapter 3 and 4 the most, but I find I have spent a lot of time rewriting chapter 2.

It's the end of the day and I finally have a moment to reply to some questions. First, Welcome to the DH.

Your problem is common and with the lack of a diverse faculty in any one dept you will have that...Nonetheless you have to find a topic that someone in your small dept is an expert in. You have to be able to find a match so that s/he can supervise your research. It doesn't mean you can't focus on diversity or lack there of. For example if someone (faculty member) is interested is attitudes in family behavior you could compare racial attitudes in family behavior. That allows the faculty to still focus in an area in which s/he is an expert but then you bring something new to that area of research.

So start thinking more broadly and then add the diversity component to it.

When you are reading you should use some basic questions that you want answered from these articles. Think about those questions first before you start reading. Then look for the answers in the article rather than just reading then thinking about what the reading means.

So for example: What is the Research Question?
    What theory is being used?
What are the components of the theory?
    What's the sample or population?
    What are the methods?
    Findings
    Limitations?

Does this research support or negate my research question?

Be systematic about how you read to make progress with this work.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello All

Welcome to the DH. Welcome to all who are joining us virtually.

Today in the DH the Associate Dean gave us a mini lecture on choosing your committee. He suggested that we try to:

1.Balance the committee with members who bring different skills to the project

2.Be sure that the committee members get along with each other

    3. Make sure that you have a mentor someone that can give you the "inside scoop" on what's really going on in the dept, or what you need to finish, and who can help you complete your degree

    4. Know that your research advisor is not the same as a mentor; sometime it is but sometimes it's not

    5. Pay attention to the "lore (gossip)" in your department about who gets along with whom.

    Beverly
Just make the commitment to do something everyday no matter how small it is.

Jackie> if you get tired just focus on the transitional paragraphs making sure that you have them in the document.

    ehlongs

All you have right now is a topic; what you need is a research question.

"Governance of South African School in the Post 1994 Era" is a statement.

What about the governance are you interested in? Are you comparing governance before 1994 to governance after 1994.

Is there some particular part of the governance that you are interested in? Be more specific. Find a question that your thesis will answer.

Jin and priyanka come back...Join us

Thanks for joining us in the DH.

I am currently working on writing my dissertation. I have two main challenges, one to get my survey done and analyse it. Second to write down all the chapters from start to finish. Off course, I have some material and something written for each of the chapters. I really want to graduate this spring. I am not sure how I can get it all done. I am also not able to find time to write. Today, I was working till 5 pm and I came back home and had my dinner. So my goal for this challenge is that I write down at least one chapter to its final which is the chapter on qualitative research. I already have it written down in parts. Now I need to compile it and edit it so that I can show it to my advisor. I am going to start compiling today and revise it in the next two days and by the end of the weekend I will send it to my advisor. I hope that will get me started.

Oh what a day! Second day of Dissertation House. My goals for today were: (1) Continue reading document that contributes to my literature review and (2) Begin to write my experimental setup. I also had a scheduled one-on-one session with Dr. Carter.

I accomplished my reading by 12 noon. Yes! But the best part of my and the worst was meeting with Dr. Carter. I am trying to graduate this coming May 09', which means that my thesis needs to be completed by mid March...that's in about 7 weeks... Sounds impossible!

Well after meeting with Dr. Carter, it still sounds impossible but she was able to help me set realistic deadlines...which I intend to uphold...

With all this ahead of me, it is inevitable that my life will be stress free...
BUT the good thing is that I was given the remedy earlier this afternoon. One of the speakers was Dr. Ingram from UMBC Counseling services who gave some really good info on how to minimize the stress... So you know what, I will go take a half an hr of ME time.....

    Until tomorrow! Bye

For those of you who are worried after your one-on-one sessions, please remember that Dr. Carter also has office hours, so your consultations don't have to stop on Friday. We will also have a follow-up Dissertation House day at UMBC (with meals!) on the first Friday in February. I will be back from Puerto Rico, so I will be present and look forward to helping.

By now you've had a chance to hear Dr. Judith Kadarusman Pollack ... she was in the DH as a student not long ago. I'm sure that she provided some helpful information.

The good news is that all of you have worked on your dissertations and theses this week. Congratulations!!! You are steps closer to being finished. And yes, it can be done!

    Good Morning All

And this is the last day of the Dissertation House.

I have a quiet moment before the students arrive.

Yesterday in the DH, Dr. Abraham spoke about things to do to keep stress to a minimum.

She says that whatever you did before you started your writing your dissertation you should continue those habits. For example, if you use to exercise, to keep your stress down don't stop so that you can write more.

At TADA we believe in setting daily, monthly and annual goals and we strongly recommend that you reward yourself every time you accomplish any small goal because if you don't celebrate your success who will?

Dr.Pollak talked about the presentation at the the defense and the importance of clarity and doing things like numbering your slide if you are doing a PowerPoint presentation.

Good morning. Today I will be reviewing everything I worked on the first two days of DH and then reading a chapter on survival analysis using SAS. If I still have time, I will read 1-2 journal articles.

I'm going to continue to work on my methodology section today. Hopefully, my advisor has sent me some comments, but I have plenty to do anyway. I'm losing steam, so I may do some small, semi-brainless tasks that need to be done anyway.

Hi, today I hope to finish writing the results sections of my paper and hopefully write some part of the discussion as well. But this will be just a rough draft.

The dissertation house has been wonderful. It is great to have time free to obligations and distractions to work on my master's thesis.

I have made significant steps in my data analysis and I am excited about moving forward.

My newest challenge is to work everyday on the document, so that I can keep the momentum going.

So far, I have met most of my goals. I've created scale scores for 2/3 variables, determined the skewness and kurtosis of my variables, and conducted an EFA for one of my variables.

Today, I'll be working on getting organized, and reviewing the output of my EFA. I will also be coding all of the missing data as missing in SPSS.

    Hello All!
Today is day 3 of DH 09'. Honestly, I don't want this to be over. The amount of things that I have accomplished over these 3 days is way more than what I have done over the last semester. But,the show must go on,and DH won't be a success if I didn't replicate what I have learned, as I complete my thesis.

Today, I have done:(1)a general outline of my thesis; (2) drag and copy previously written papers into the grad school's template and (3) make a thesis notebook, with up-to-date printouts of the completed sections.

I will spend the rest of the afternoon, trying to complete my methodology section,as I plan to head to the lab on Monday and (2) I will give detailed outline of Chapter 2,the Literature review section.

It was nice being here today..Until next time...

YES!!! MY DOCUMENT IS MOVING FORWARD

I'm still doing QC, but I'm almost done. I am on schedule. I've also done many other things on my to-do list. I had a bright idea last night and I think it can be another journal paper from my thesis.

I received many helpful tips in dissertation house and meeting other students in the same position as I was also great.

    Hello

Thank you all for joining the Dissertation House blog. I appreciate your participation and I hope that you have been able to make some progress.

The one thing that you should realize is that you are not alone. There are plenty of people struggling with similar issues.

We left the Dissertation House tired and exhausted. Many students left with a plan on how to finish their proposal, thesis or dissertation.

By all means please join us this summer when we have another one.

You are more than welcome Shelly. 7 weeks to go. Your adrenaline should be pumping.

This is a new week for all of you. I hope you have set some goals this week. Make your transition from the DH meaningful. Keep up the good work.

It's starting to snow here in MD. Sorry I am not a snow bunny; I am in a love affair with the sun and heat. I can't wait until Spring.

I have finished working on my syllabi and my first day of class starts early in the morning.

It's the end of the month so I must also start thinking about next month's TADA FinishLine newsletter.

If you haven't signed up for our Monthly newsletter please do so. http://www.tadafinallyfinished.com/newsletter/index.html

You will find a lot of tips and tools there to help you finish your degree. Check out the archives too.

    Good Morning

We are back in the Dissertation House today. We will be back once a month to check back, and check up on our progress since last month.

How much progress have you made? Join us today. It's 9:12a you have no excuses. You have until 5:00 to get something done. Do you have 15 minutes to spare to work on your dissertation?

    What will that something be?

I will be meeting with students one-on-one today but in between I will like to submit an abstract to a conference today.

If I get that done I will like to create a separate Dissertation House Blog.

Those are my 2 goals for today. What are yours?

Blog in and let us know.

Shelly where are you? Post your goals you have been the most faithful to this process.

HyeSook and Susan are here with me this morning.
